Over the past month, fuel prices have risen exponentially across Europe.

The highest figures were recorded in the Netherlands, Norway and Germany. In these countries, E5 (Super Unleaded) is currently 25-30% more expensive than the European average.

That’s why everyone is looking to save money and fuel.

Even though we know the best way to save fuel is to avoid using our vehicles, we don’t always have that option.

That’s why we’re bringing you useful fuel-saving techniques that could help you save a considerable amount of money on the trips you need to make:

Top Tips to Maximise Fuel Economy

Top Tips to Maximise Fuel Economy

  • Keep revs to a minimum

Why? Revs increase engine and transmission stress, burning fuel faster.

  • No sudden braking

Why? Lower gears require faster engine revs, which in turn require more fuel.

  • Clean the fuel system regularly

Why? Cleaning the fuel system removes deposits and opens the pathways that carry fuel and oxygen to your engine.

  • Remove roof boxes and trailers when not in use

Why? The increased weight in the “frontal area” of the vehicle affects the aerodynamics of the car.

  • Check tyre pressures regularly

Why? If you ignore tyres pressures for as little as a month, your car can lose between 1-2 PSi. This will result in a drop in pressure which could reduce fuel economy.

  • Get the wheel alignment checked

Why? Improper wheel alignment accelerates tyre wear, reduces fuel efficiency, causes wheels to work against each other and impairs braking ability. When your vehicle is out of alignment, it affects your entire vehicle.

  • Keep the oil system clean and make sure you’re not late on your oil change.

Why? Contamination can remain in the engine when you change the oil, which if left behind can affect the vehicle’s performance and efficiency. Clean the oil system at every oil change and replace the fuel filters, air filters and spark plugs (for petrol engine) when necessary.

  • Use the air conditioning instead of opening windows

Why? Vehicles are designed to be aerodynamic. Driving with the windows open causes drag and costs you fuel.

  • Plan your route to avoid traffic peaks

Why? Start/stop traffic means your vehicle will spend more time idling and burning fuel, even when stationary.

  • Use a navigation app to travel a few miles as possible.

Why? The navigation algorithm selects the most fuel-efficient route.
